Le troisième géant du dessin animé américain avec Walt Disney et Tex Avery.Chuck Jones passe son enfance à Hollywood dans l'admiration de Buster Keaton et Charlie Chaplin. Parfois, il tient de petits rôles d’enfants. Durant ses études au California Institute of the Arts, Chuck Jones, pour un dollar, dessine le portrait des passants sur Olvera Street.
Il commence sa carrière en 1932 aux Iwerks Studios appartenant à l’ex-animateur phare des studios Disney, Ub Iwerks. Il nettoie des cellulos mais devient vite assistant animateur. Au même moment il rencontre Dorothy Webster et l’épouse. Après un petit passage chez Charles Mintz et Walter Lantz, Chuck Jones entre aux studios Leon Schlesinger chez Warner où il travaille de 1933 à 1962, si ce n’est l’escapade de 1955 chez Walt Disney où, dira-t-il, le seul poste qui l’intéressait était celui de Walt Disney ! A la Warner, il travaille avec Tex Avery sur les célèbres séries Merrie Melodies et les Looney Tunes. Chuck jones a une production prolifique avec une galerie de personnages foisonnante.Les personnages créés par Chuck Jones sont nombreux à être inscrits dans notre inconscient collectif, que ce soit Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Bip Bip, Vil Coyote, Ralph le loup, Sam, le chien de berger, Marvin le Martien, Pépé le putois et bien d'autres encore… En 1938, à 25 ans, Chuck Jones réalise son premier dessin animé The Night Watchman. Rapidement, Chuck Jones dirige sa propre filiale au sein de la Warner Bros. Il a une production foisonnante. Durant la guerre de 39-45, Chuck Jones collabore avec Théodore Geisel dit Dr Seuss sur la série Private Snafu commanditée par l’armée américaine. Le comique soldat Snafu mime aux autres soldats, comment repérer les espions et décrit les risques du laisser-aller. Après-guerre, Chuck Jones et Dr Seuss continuent à travailler ensemble sur des adaptations de livres de Seuss. Chuck Jones sait s’entourer, il travaille notamment avec le scénariste Michael Maltese, et aussi de Abe Levitow, Ken Harris et Ben Washam qui dessinent, animent ou réalisent des films avec lui. A son retour de chez Disney, en 1955, Chuck Jones crée le tandem légendaire Bip Bip et Coyote ainsi qu'une série autour de Marvin le Martien. Quand la Warner Bros ferme son secteur animation, en 1962, Chuck Jones est embauché à la Metro Goldwin Mayer et participe à la série Tom & Jerry. Il travaille également sur une adaptation pour la télévision Comment le Grinch a volé Noël. Travailleur inlassable, la carrière de Chuck Jones, sera la plus longue de l'histoire du cinéma d'animation et durera 70 ans !En 1962 Chuck Jones s’associe également avec les Goldman pour lancer Sib Tower 12 Productions qui se transformera en Chuck Jones Entreprises en 1970 et il crée des courts métrages d’animations pour la télévision. Son entreprise fait des publicités, des émissions TV régulières. Parmi les dessins animés de cette période certains restent remarquables : The Jungle Book : Mowgli’s Brothers, une adaptation des œuvres de Rudyard Kipling et The White Seal et Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. En 1984, Chuck Jones apparaît dans une scène des Gremlins et c’est lui qui dirige en 1990 la scène de Bugs Bunny et Daffy Duck dans Gremlins 2 : The New Batch. Il réalise également les parties en cinéma d’animation des films Stay Tuned en 1992 et Mrs Doubtfire en 1993. Il crée la fondation Chuck Jones Fondation en 2000, en pensant aux générations futures. Il veut transmettre, développer et préserver l’art du cinéma d’animation traditionnel par ce legs au patrimoine mondial. Jusqu’à sa mort en 2002, Chuck Jones a beaucoup travaillé, il aura même droit à une rétrospective de son travail au Museum of Modern Art de New York. En 1989, il publie son autobiographie Chuck Amuck.
A 89 ans, le 22 janvier 2002, Chuck Jones décède d’un infarctus du myocarde, il est alors le dernier cinéaste vivant de la géniale équipe des créateurs des Looney Tunes et des Merrie Melodies, il rejoint son maître Tex Avery au paradis des cartoons…
