Les frères Fleischer ont inventé le rotoscope.Comme les mousquetaires, les deux frères Fleischer était
trois… Originaires d'Autriche Max, Joe et Dave Fleischer débarquent
à New-York en 1887. Mais c'est en 1915, alors qu'il travaille
au magazine Popular Science Monthly, que Max Fleischer la tête
pensante de cette famille hors du commun invente le rotoscope. Ce
procédé permet de décalquer sur une table de
projection transparente, image par image, une scène filmée
avec de vrais personnages afin de parvenir à transposer au
plus près la finesse des mouvements. Grâce à
cette invention, avec Joe à la fabrication, Max au
dessin et Dave dans le rôle principal de Koko le clown ils
créent un petit dessin animé d'une minute intitulé
Experiment N°1 qui marque ainsi leur entrée officielle
dans le milieu de l'animation en 1918. Lors d'un rendez-vous pour présenter son film à la
société Paramount, Max Fleischer retrouve un ami, J.R.
Bray, qui l’engage aussitôt dans son propre studio.
Malheureusement, la guerre éclate et Max doit réaliser
des films sur l'entraînement dans l'armée avant de
rejoindre son ami. Ce n'est donc qu'après la guerre, en 1919,
que Max Fleischer s'engage dans le studio Bray pour commencer la
série Hors de l'encrier (Out of Inkwell) qui connaît
beaucoup de succès durant deux ans. Max Fleischer décide alors de
s'associer à son frère Dave en 1921 en créant la Out of Inkwell films, Inc. Les frères Fleischer vont inventer de nombreuses d'innovations techniques pour optimiser la production de dessin animé.Après le rotoscope, les frères Fleischer inventent
le rotographe. Cette nouvelle technique permet de régler les
interactions entre un dessin et des personnages dans un environnement
réel. Les frères Fleischer sont innovants, créatifs, leur réputation est
faite. Ils sont également à
l’origine d’un nouveau corps de métiers : les
intervallistes, destinés à dessiner les images
manquantes entre deux mouvements. C’est grâce à la technique du Dr Lee Forrest que
les frères Fleischer, en 1924, vont produire des films sonores
et le premier personnage parlant de l'histoire du dessin animé,
devançant en cela Walt Disney et son Steamboat Willy. Ils
mettent au point la « Bouncing Ball ». Prémices du karaoké, cette boule montre les syllabes à chanter sur
l’écran. Les Fleischer lancent alors leur propre société
de distribution, la Red Seal Pictures. Mais, dès 1927, leur
société, trop endettée, dépose son bilan.
Un associé se joint à eux et préside la nouvelle
société de production Inkwell Imps. Pour la
distribution, les frères Fleischer passent par la Paramount.
Mais ils doivent à nouveau fermer cette société.
La Paramount devient alors l’actionnaire principale du Fleischer
Studios Inc. Ils se diversifient alors et produisent des films
éducatifs ou illustrant des chansons, des films sonores et ce
avant la Warner Bros avec Le Chanteur de Jazz. Max et Dave Fleischer créent deux véritables stars mondiales du dessin animé : Betty Boop et Popeye.Alors qu'un grand nombre de studios restent sur le carreau avec
l'arrivée du son dans le cinéma, cela est plutôt
un avantage pour la Fleischer Studio Inc qui s'y est préparée
depuis bien longtemps. Dès 1930,les frères Fleischer
créent une série de dessins animés parlants nommée
Talkartoons dans laquelle apparaîtra celle qui va devenir la
plus grande star féminine de l'animation du 20e siècle
: Betty Boop. On peut voir Betty Boop pour la première fois en
août 1930, c’est la petite copine de Bimbo, le personnage
animé en vogue des frères Fleischer. Popeye apparaît
également dans les Talkartoons à la même époque. Toujours pris par des inventions incroyables, malgré le fait que le
Fleischer Studios Inc batte de l’aile, Max Fleischer, conçoit en 1934,
une nouvelle technique pour filmer un dessin animé en 3D en
plaçant une feuille de celluloïd devant un décor
réel tandis que le fond du décor est plan. Bien
qu’ingénieuse, la mise en pratique de cette technique est
fastidieuse et les frères Fleischer l’utiliseront peu. C’est
pourtant ce principe qui sera à l’origine de la caméra
multipane, mise au point quelque temps après, mais par Walt
Disney. L'effervescence de l'invention technique de ces débuts du
cinéma suscite aussi une extraordinaire vitalité
artistique, Betty Boop. Par exemple est une véritable bombe !
Elle est le premier sex symbol du cinéma, mais la censure
gouvernementale met rapidement le coup d'arrêt à cette
liberté d’expression. Washington veut contrôler les
productions cinématographiques et le code Hays définit
la politique de production : pas de films d’horreur, pas de sexe,
pas de blagues inconvenantes à la Marx Brothers… Hollywood
se soumet et édulcore rapidement ses productions et, renonçant
à son sex-appeal flamboyant, Betty Boop devient une amoureuse
asexuée. En perdant ses charmes, Betty Boop perd ses fans et
les frères Fleischer perdent des marchés. Paramount,
distributeur des Fleischer Studios Inc, les oblige à «
imiter » Walt Disney, leur série Color Classics se fond
alors dans la masse des dessins animés, sans plus aucune
spécificité et sans pour autant concurrencer les Silly
Symphonies de Walt Disney. Les deux longs métrages des frères Fleischer seront des échecs.En 1937, une grève frappe les studios Fleischer, quatre ans
avant celle qui touchera les studios Disney. Poussé à
accepter un compromis, Max Fleischer est bien décidé à
ce que ce type d'incident ne se reproduise plus. C'est pourquoi il se
lance dans l'opération très coûteuse de déménager
ses studios en Floride alors même que la concurrence avec
Disney est à son plus haut point. En effet Disney s'apprête
à sortir le premier long métrage en dessin animé
et en couleur de l'histoire du cinéma : Blanche Neige. En accord avec la
Paramount, les frères Fleischer décide de le contrer en
réalisant le leur. Il leur faut faire vite car là où
Disney dispose de 4 ans et d'un million de dollars, ils ne disposent
que de 18 mois et 500 000 dollars. Les frères Fleischer réalisent donc ce long métrage
Gulliver’s Travels. Mais le film n’obtient pas le succès
financier escompté par la Paramount entre autres parce que la
Seconde guerre mondiale empêche de le distribuer en Europe.
Paramount leur commande un nouveau long métrage. Mais Mr. Bug goes to town sort en salle en décembre 1941, juste après
l’attaque de Pearl Harbor, l’Amérique qui entre en guerre n’a plus le cœur à entrer au cinéma et Mr Bug goes to town est un désastre commercial. Les Fleischer Studios Inc se recentrent alors sur des productions
plus classiques et sécurisantes économiquement, les
Superman, une adaptation de la bande dessinée. Les frères Fleischer retrouvent
leur véritable style et se démarquent à nouveau
de leurs concurrents. L’animation des personnages de Superman est
peaufinée, le scénario moins abêtissant et plus
social que ce qui a cours au même moment. Ils décrochent
un bon budget. Superman aura un très grand succès, mais
insuffisant pour racheter l’hypothèque des Fleischer Studios
Inc à la Paramount qui en devient propriétaire.
Renommés Famous Studio, Popeye et autres séries
continuent de paraître, mais les frères Fleischer se
séparent. Dave Fleischer devient responsable des animations à
la Colombia Pictures, puis scénariste chez Universal, tandis
que Max Fleischer retourne d’où il venait, aux Bray Studios
avec son ami.
